Understanding Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
OCD is a mental health condition characterized by unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) that a person feels driven to perform. Common symptoms include:
- Washing: Excessive concern about contamination and cleaning
- Checking: Repeated verification of locks, appliances, or safety
- Ordering: Need for symmetry, exactness, or specific arrangements
- Obsessing: Intrusive, distressing thoughts that are hard to control
- Hoarding: Difficulty discarding items regardless of their value
- Neutralizing: Mental or behavioral rituals to reduce anxiety
Good news: OCD is highly treatable with evidence-based therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), often combined with medication.
